Gender, Geopolitics and Nationhood in the Eurovision Song Contest

October 27, 2022
  • Dr. Catherine Baker

The ‘performances’ of national identity which occur through the Eurovision Song Contest have always had potential to reveal narratives about gender and geopolitics. Since the mid-2000s, debates about LGBTQ+ rights in central and eastern Europe have provided a particularly prominent frame for making sense of the politics of Eurovision. With Conchita Wurst’s famous victory now eight years old, this lecture asks how the relationships between gender, sexuality, nationhood and Europeanness we can perceive through Eurovision stand today. Hinweis: Veranstaltung findet in hybrider Form vor Ort statt.
